Composer William Byrd, who lived in the turbulent religious and social climate of Renaissance England, expressed through coded terms his solidarity with the oppressed, writing music of beauty, power, and surprising delicacy. This was music for behind closed doors, which The Marian Consort reflects in the cloistered intimacy of its performance.
